On this date in 2018, a line of severe storms blasted through the D.C. area producing a calendar-day record of 1.49 inches of rain at Reagan National Airport. It was one of a record 24 days in 2018 — D.C.’s wettest year observed — in which at least an inch of rain fell.
The potent storms, fronted by menacing clouds, toppled trees (Reston, Virginia, was particularly hard hit), prompted a flash flood warning for the District and cut power to tens of thousands of customers. At least one person was injured when lightning caused a house fire in Frederick County, Maryland, The Washington Post reported.
