DC weather history for May 14

Severe storms in 2018 brought record rainfall, widespread tree damage, and flooding as part of the wettest year on record in Washington.

On this date in 2018, a line of severe storms blasted through the D.C. area producing a calendar-day record of 1.49 inches of rain at Reagan National Airport. It was one of a record 24 days in 2018 — D.C.’s wettest year observed — in which at least an inch of rain fell.

The potent storms, fronted by menacing clouds, toppled trees (Reston, Virginia, was particularly hard hit), prompted a flash flood warning for the District and cut power to tens of thousands of customers. At least one person was injured when lightning caused a house fire in Frederick County, Maryland, The Washington Post reported.
