DC weather history for June 20

Severe storms in 2015 dumped torrential rain, triggering flood and tornado warnings during an exceptionally wet June.

On this date in 2015, a calendar-day record 2.37 inches of rain fell in D.C. as severe thunderstorms swept through the region. The National Weather Service issued several flash-flood and tornado warnings as the storms passed by. A tornado was confirmed near Frederick, Maryland.

“Rain fell in torrents and buckets Saturday night, out of an ominous black sky tinged with green and even orange,” The Washington Post’s Martin Weil reported. “Hail rattled down, water rose and tornado warnings abounded.”

The storms contributed to the second-wettest June on record, which included 18 days with measurable rain; at least 2 inches of rain fell on three separate days.
