DC weather history for June 18

A prolonged chill in 1965 kept temperatures unusually low before a rapid flip to summer heat just days later.

On this date in 1965, the temperature dipped to a calendar-day record low of 51 degrees. It was the fifth straight morning with lows in the 50s, and highs had only reached the 60s on the three previous afternoons. The maximum of 60 on June 16 was a calendar-day record low and tied for the coolest high ever observed so late in June. A slow-developing zone of low pressure off the Mid-Atlantic coast directed ocean breezes inland, causing the enduring chill. It ended the next day, when highs reached the mid-80s, followed by four straight days in the 90s.
