DC weather history for June 16

On this date in 2016, severe storms unleashed hail the size of baseballs and damaging winds in the D.C. region. The largest hail battered Middleburg, Virginia, blowing out car windshields. One eyewitness described it as the “hailstorm from hell.”

High winds toppled dozens of trees across the region, including in D.C.

The National Weather Service issued five tornado warnings as the storms swept through. “Storm spotters reported over 150 instances of storm damage from hail and wind across Virginia and Maryland,” the Capital Weather Gang reported.
