DC weather history for July 31

Extreme heat in 1954 pushed temperatures to a record 103 degrees, part of a punishing early-summer hot streak.

On this date in 1954, the temperature soared to a calendar-day record of 103 degrees. “One man died and scores of persons were overcome by the heat yesterday as Washington sizzled through its hottest day in 18 years,” the front page of The Washington Post said the next day. “It was the fifth-straight day of 90-plus heat for Washington, which recorded the highest temperature in the East.”
