DC weather history for July 16

Extreme heat has peaked at 104 degrees, tying among the hottest days on record and occurring during notable multi-day heat waves.

On this date in 1988 and 2024, the temperature soared to a calendar-day record of 104 degrees, which is the third-highest temperature observed on any day in D.C. In 2024, it marked the third straight day with highs above 100, “matching the longest such streak on record set in 1930 at the beginning of the Dust Bowl,” the Capital Weather Gang wrote. In 1988, the front page of The Washington Post reported that the high of 104 made it the “hottest day in 52 years” and that the District issued a health warning.
