DC weather history for January 24

A 1940 storm dropped a record 9.5 inches of snow, with persistent cold keeping it on the ground for nearly two weeks.

On this day in 1940, a calendar-day record 9.5 inches of snow fell in the District. The same storm produced 21.6 inches in Richmond the day before, the most on record for Virginia’s capital.

Snow from this storm remained on the ground in D.C. for 11 days before it entirely melted Feb. 4. Temperatures fell into the teens or lower every night from Jan. 25 to Feb. 3
