DC weather history for February 6

Relentless cold in 1895 set record highs and lows near 10 and 1 degrees, part of a prolonged freeze with persistent snow cover lasting nearly a month.

On this day in 1895, the high of 10 degrees and low of 1 degree were both calendar-day records for cold. It marked the second day of a five-day stretch with highs between 10 and 17 degrees and lows between 0 and 7. On Feb. 7 and 8, 7.4 inches of snow fell amid the frigid temperatures, and snow cover in the District reached a foot. Snow had been on the ground since Jan. 28 and remained on the ground until Feb. 23, tied for the second-longest such period on record.
