DC weather history for February 10

Brutal Arctic air in 1899 held the high to just 4 degrees—the coldest ever recorded—setting the stage for even deeper cold and a historic blizzard to follow.

On this day in 1899, the high was only 4 degrees, the lowest maximum temperature ever recorded in D.C. The low temperature of minus-8 was a calendar-day record.

The next day (on Feb. 11), the low would drop to minus-15, D.C.’s lowest temperature ever observed. Fourteen inches of snow were on the ground amid the bitter cold and one of the area’s great blizzards was still to come on Feb. 12 to 14.
