A 1962 snowfall set a daily record and helped lay the groundwork for a rare white Christmas just days later.

On this day in 1962, a calendar-day record 5.3 inches of snow fell. Some of that snow would remain on the ground through Christmas Day when it was replenished with a fresh 5.4 inches.
