DC weather history for December 14

A 2003 Gulf-origin storm brought a messy mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain, creating slushy conditions rather than a classic winter scene.

On this day in 2003, a storm originating in the Gulf of Mexico moved into the Mid-Atlantic region and dropped 2 to 4 inches of snow in the D.C. area. As milder air moved in during the storm, the snow mixed with and changed to sleet and freezing rain. “The cold, slushy deluge that befell Washington yesterday was neither picturesque nor the best for making snowballs,” The Washington Post reported.

It followed another winter storm that produced significant snow in parts of the area on Dec. 5 and Dec. 6 that year.
