DC weather history for December 12

An unusual cold snap in 1988 set record lows for both the high and low, marking one of the most extreme modern-era cold days in Washington.

On this day in 1988, the high and low temperatures of 23 and 13 were both calendar-day record lows. The day’s average temperature of 18 degrees was 24 degrees below the norm. It was a rare case of a day so cold this late in the 20th century. Most of Washington’s cold weather records occurred in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
