A violent 2000 thunderstorm turned deadly when a lightning strike killed a man near the West Falls Church Metro, as the storm brought widespread damage and downed trees across the region.

On this date in 2000, a 33-year-old man was killed by a lightning strike outside the West Falls Church Metro station as a severe thunderstorm came through. The man, Israel Hernandez, was sitting on a low wall on the east side of the station when he was struck, The Washington Post reported.

“The fast-moving thunderstorm that socked the Washington area Monday night was the season’s worst, leaving a mess of downed trees, damaged homes and wide-eyed residents in the neighborhoods of Arlington and eastern parts of the District, where it pounced hardest,” The Post wrote.
