DC weather history for August 4

Tropical Storm Isaias in 2020 brought record rainfall, strong winds, and tornadoes, knocking out power to hundreds of thousands across the region.

On this date in 2020, a calendar-day record 2.48 inches of windswept rain fell as Tropical Storm Isaias swept up the East Coast. About 400,000 customers lost power in Virginia and Maryland.

“Generally, about 1 to 3 inches of rain fell in the immediate area, with 3 to 6 inches in our east and southeast suburbs,” the Capital Weather Gang wrote. “Peak wind gusts reached about 30 to 40 mph along Interstate 95 but quickly increased to nearly 50 to 60 mph or higher near the Bay.”

In addition, three tornadoes were reported in Southern Maryland.
