DC weather history for August 21

Repeated storms in 2018 dumped record rainfall with intense downpours, leading to flooding and marking one of the heaviest August rain events in years.

On this date in 2018, a calendar-day record 2.46 inches of rain fell. “Storms swept through the Washington region yet again ahead of the evening commute, forcing several roads to close because of floods,” The Washington Post reported.

The rain came in multiple rounds and rainfall rates exceeded 3 inches per hour in parts of the area. The 2.46 inches that fell in D.C. marked the largest calendar-day rainstorm in August since 2011. That year would go on to be the wettest on record.
