DC weather history for August 18

Heavy rain from Hurricane Diane in 1955 flooded rivers and roads, while in 2002 an intense heat wave pushed temperatures to a record 98 degrees during a prolonged stretch of 90s.

On this date in 1955, the remnants of Hurricane Diane brought heavy rain to the D.C. region. More than 3 inches were reported at D.C.’s National Arboretum while double digit totals occurred in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

“Rain-swollen rivers and streams went on a bank-breaching rampage yesterday in Virginia and Maryland, throwing a high-water blockage across hundreds of roads in the Old Dominion,” The Washington Post wrote the next day.

The impacts of Diane were generally less severe than its predecessor, Hurricane Connie, which passed the week before, The Post said.

And on this date in 2002, the temperature soared to a calendar-day record high 0f 98 degrees. It marked the ninth straight day that the high reach 90 or higher in an 11-day streak. It also hit at least 95 for the seventh day in a row, part of an eight-day streak which is tied for the second-longest on record.
