A chilly coastal storm in 1970 dumped near-record April rainfall, with cold, steady rains driven by a slow-moving system offshore.

On this date in 1970,  a coastal storm produced a calendar-day record 3.04 inches of rain in D.C, the second most observed in April.. Temperatures hovered in the 40s amid the deluge. National Weather Service maps showed a slow-moving zone of low pressure off the coast of North Carolina which drifted north to just off the Delmarva coast the next day.
